Ich wollte nie eine Rezension schreiben - welchen Sinn hat es, Musik und Texte mit subjektiven Eindrücken zu beschreiben oder Dinge, wie bei Bildern, in sie hinein zu interpretieren. Eine einzige Ausnahme mache ich heute dennoch für Van Morrison und sein Schaffen - ich fühle mich wohl in seiner Musik, angekommen und denke, Sie sollten ihn erleben und seine Musik lieben lernen - diese Platte ist ein mehr als guter Einstieg.

Weniger wäre mehr, aber der Rest ist genial (6. Dezember 2006)

Die schlechte Nachricht: Die Doppel CD enthält zuviel Füllmaterial, uninspierierte Songs, die man besser nicht aufgenommen hätte. Ich erspare mir die Aufzählung. Vollschrott.

Die gute Nachricht: Doppel CD kaufen, selber auf die wirklich wunderschönen, introvertierten Songs von Van Morrison runterkochen, die all seine Selbstzweifel und Unzufriedenheit ("Why must i always explain"), seine Sehnsucht nach den Zeiten seiner Jugend ("Hyndford Street", "Take me back"), seine eigene Philosophie ("Hymns to the silence") transportieren. Dazu ein paar der anderen Songs die einem gefallen, Schrott rauslassen. Komprimiert auf 45 MInuten würde man eines der schönsten VM Alben aller Zeiten erhalten.

INSPIRATIONAL MASTERPIECE (16. Juni 2003)

Hymns To The Silence is an opus magnum where Morrison's talent reaches awesome new heights. The album impresses on many levels: the lyrical ingenuity, melodic beauty, intelligent arrangements and above all the expert mastery of many different musical styles, including country, folk, soul, rock and gospel.

Although every track is memorable and tuneful, my favourites include I'm Not Feeling It Anymore with its galloping rhythms and flowing melody, the rocking Ordinary Life, a wry observation on life, the jaunty, jazzy So Complicated and the beautiful authentic country song I Can't Stop Loving You.

Very personal observations like Professional Jealousy and Why Must I Always Explain have more of the folky feel about them, especially the second one with its hypnotic melody line. Perhaps the greatest moment is Be Thou My Vision, an extraordinarily powerful hymn that is one of this artist's best descriptions of spiritual ecstasy.

In this regard, the title track is gripping too, but more subdued and restrained, creating a feeling of awe. See Me Through (Just A Closer Walk With Thee) is also very moving but a more traditional slice of gospel and it reminds me of Astral Weeks. The soulful song Take Me Back with its wistful harmonica likewise has a touch of that great album.

Hymns To The Silence is an uplifting work of genius on a par with Astral Weeks, Moondance and Tupelo Honey but provides greater variety than any of them. Every track here has some special quality and the alternating musical styles make it a wonderful and inspiring listening experience.

Van at his best (12. März 2002)

Ein Meisterwerk! Kaum ein Album hat mich so begeistert wie dieses. Van Morrison zeigt hier die komplette Bandbreite seines überragenden musikalischen Könnens. Unterstützt von weiteren großartigen Künstlern wie Georgie Fame und den Chieftains erklimmt er hier einen Gipfel nach dem anderen. Insgesamt geht die Platte mehr in Richtung Folk und ruhige Balladen, als in Richtung Blues und Soul. Neben genialen Eigenkompositionen kitzelt Van Morrison auch aus alten Klassikern wie dem Ray-Charles-Standard " I can`t stop loving you" neue überraschende Seiten heraus.
"Hymns to the silence" aus der Stereoanlage, in der linken Hand ein frisches Guinness und in der rechten Hand einen Lagavulin, dazu ein prasselndes Kaminfeuer: Herz, was willst du mehr?

Ein Wahnsinn ! Van hat noch immer das Zeug zum faszinierenden Songwriter, der alles bisher dagewesene in den Schatten stellt. Hyms to the silence ist ein Meisterwerk !
