Story within a story (21. August 2007)

The actors are perfect. I can't say anything new about Meryl Streep, who I believe to be the finest actress ever to have graced the cinema screen. Here (as ever) she is perfect - if you didn't know she was American you would believe she is English, the accent is so accurate. She embodies the character of Sarah perfectly with a multi layered performance, managing to convey Sarah's dignity, her independence and her complex mystery. My only criticism (if you can call it that) is that she is too beautiful! According to the novel, Sarah is "not beautiful by any period's standards", but with her porcelain complexion and delicate features, Meryl Streep is stunning. As Charles, Jeremy Irons gives a commanding performance, managing to convey the character's genteel veneer and the inner passion that lurks beneath. Both actors are excellent, and the chemistry between the leads is tangible.
A "Story within a story". The way in which Harold Pinter weaves the Fowles tale with the lives of Anna and Mike - the actresses who are playing the Victorian lovers, is inspired. The manner in which the film flits from Victorian age to modern day, is the filmic way of conveying Fowles's tendency in the novel to judge his Victorian characters and their era by Twentieth Century standards. Some critics have found this device jarring - I find it clever and affecting.
Overall, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' is a beautiful, haunting tale of repressed love and social hypocrisy. Right from the opening shot, where we see the image of Sarah on the Cobb looking out to sea, the viewer is grabbed and drawn into this complex world. The actors are faultless, the screenplay ingenious and the cinematography and score, haunting. If you normally find yourself disappointed by novel adaptations, look no further than 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' to show you that when a work is adapted properly, the results can be stunning.

Ein seltsamer Film (3. August 2007)

Ich habe das Buch nicht gelesen. Es kann sein, dass der Film eine gute Adaption ist. Wenn, dann hätte mir das Buch sicher auch nicht gefallen. Ich mochte die Handlung einfach nicht - hinten und vorne fand ich die Handlung unausgegoren und nicht nachvollziehbar. Warum hat Sarah den Kerl, nachdem sie ihn in ihr Hotelzimmer gelockt hatte und er sogar seine Verlobte hat sitzenlassen, eigentlich nicht genommen? Da wäre sie doch fein raus gewesen! Warum hat sie sich dann aber letztlich doch finden lassen? Was sollte das alles? Und warum hat die Schauspielerin den Kollegen dann doch versetzt? Ich bekam keine Erklärungen, alles blieb so nebelhaft - das sollte wohl kunstvoll sein.
Vielleicht habe ich ja einfach kein Kunstverständnis.
Hinterher habe ich mich jedenfalls geärgert über die verschwendete Zeit.
Denn Irons und Streep sind ja eigentlich eine Garantie für einen guten Film.

Satisfying on many levels (14. Oktober 2005)

This film "The French Lieutenant's Woman" based on a novel by John Fowles (Author of "The Magus"), and screen play by the famous Harold Pinter, is satisfying on many levels.

We are transported back and forth through time as present day actors making a movie are parallel and overlapped with the characters and the story. We easily see the contrasts and the similarities between the Victorian Sarah and the modern Ann both played by Meryl Streep.

The story on the surface is a strait forwarded mystery and Sarah is not what see seems. However there are many depths to this film in what is says and what it does not. A biologist Charles Henry Smithson (Jeremy Irons) is finally engaged to a woman who has been trying to tie him down. He will inherit a place in her father's empire if he wishes to do so. At the last moment he discovers a strange outcast woman that enchant hem and lures hem astray only to disappear from his life. The actors' lives are similar.
Will Charles find Sarah or is his fate to be alone?
What about Ann and Mike?

Many people remember the picturesque scene of Sarah on the Cobb looking out to sea; however for me it is a scene where the actors are discussing how she gets caught on the brambles and trips. In the next scene it is played out.

freedom beyond the pale (9. Juli 2004)

Diser Film ist wirklich der erste den ich je gesehen habe, der es schafft das das Medium Buch perfekt in das Medium Film zu adaptieren.
Ich habe den Film gesehen bevor ich das Buch gelesen habe und war fasziniert. Als ich dann das Buch "The French Lieutenant`s woman" von John Fowles gelesen hatte, war ich trotzdem nicht enttäuscht von der Filmversion!
Die seltsame Liebesgeschichte der mysteriösen Außenseiterin Sarah Woodruff, aus einfachen Verhältnissen stammend, und dem aristokratische konventionellen, jedoch liberalen Charles Smithson im Viktorianischen England (1867) bildet die Haupthandlung des Filmes. Eine dazu parallel verlaufende Handlung enthüllt, dass diese Geschichte von zwei im 20. Jahrhundert lebenden Schauspielern, Mike (Jeremy Irons) und Anna (Meryl Streep)gedreht wird. Die beiden kommen sich nicht nur als Charles und Sarah auf der Leinwand näher, sondern haben auch im wirklichen Leben aine Affäre, sind aber beide anderwärtig gebunden, d.h. verheiratet.
Die viktorianische Sarah ist eine der"fallen woman"(es wird erzählt sie hatte ein Verhältnis mit einem französischen Lieutenant)wie man sie aus Prototypisierungen des Victorian Age kennt, und steht für die Emanzipation .Sie und Charles müssen sich entscheiden, welches Ende ihre Geschichte nehmen soll (im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, denn der Roman stellt 2 verschiedene, ein gutes und ein schlechtes Ende zur Verfügung). Auch Anna und MIke müssen eine Entscheidung fällen.
Wie und warum diese so ausfallen, wie sie dargestellt werden, sollte man sich auf jeden Fall ansehen!

Karel Reisz schafft hier eine Darstellung der Liebe des viktorianischen, und des heutigen Zeialters, und kommentiert mit subtilen Mitteln ihre Gültigkeit. Es ist ein ruhiger und gefühlvoller Film, der seine Botschaft gekonnt rüberbringt.

Tragischschöne Geschichte (20. Mai 2004)

Dieser Film mit Meryln Streep und Jeremy Irons nach einem Roman von John Fowles, das Drehbuch von Harold Pinter begeistert den Zuschauer mit melancholisch schönen Bildern. Er schildert die Situation der Frau im viktorianischen Zeitalter, anhand einer wunderschönen Liebesgeschichte. Meryln Streep beweist hier, dass sie eine herausragende Charakterdarstellerin ist. Pinters Umsetzung des Stoffes, der Wechsel zwischen dem vikorianischn England und dem England heute sind brilliant. Mit 5 Oscar-Nominierungen wurde dieser Film belohnt. Die beiiden Hauptdarsteller starteten mit diesem Film ihre Filmkarrieren, und erhielten für spätere Werke den Oscar.
