Buyer Beware! (21. Juni 2008)
This is a warning to everyone out there who is planning on purchasing a Lexmark inkjet printer. Most of us know that when you purchase a new printer the ink that is included with the printer is only filled to about half of its original volume. Most companies do this so you run out of ink quickly and have to go buy more or use a refill kit to fill the cartridge. To my surprise, when I ran out of ink for my new Lexmark, there is no way to refill the ink successfully without purchasing a Lexmark ink cartridge or sending them directly to Lexmark. You cannot refill your own ink cartridge!
Lexmark is currently using a chip inside the cartridge that detects when the cartridge is low (not even close to empty) When this message appears you cannot use that cartridge anymore unless you send it to Lexmark for refilling ! They reset the chip inside the cartridge which makes it able to work again after they refill it.
If you refill the cartridge yourself before the low ink warning message appears it does not matter. The Lexmark chip has a built in usage meter that knows how much it is supposed to yield from one cartridge. If the cartridge is almost full you will still get the low ink message and cannot use that cartridge !
It was a good thing I saved my original packing. I returned it to the store and received my money back.
Don't bother unless you enjoy spending money!! (20. Juni 2008)
Lexmark is selling their printers at low prices because there is a so-called "Lexmark program". The network exchanges data with Lexmark every time you print and decides when you've used "enough" ink from the cartridge. The printer is then told to declare the cartridge "empty", even if you've just filled the cartridge and know for a fact that it is not -- and the printer stops functioning. Refilling the cartridge is not an option. Buying a new one every week for between 20 and 30 Euros is though!!I'm returning mine, and I would recommend that you don't even bother getting this ink eating machine!! It used up the cartridge after about a week.
Oh, and a review I found on amazon.com claims that "It will not print without an internet connection!" I can't verify that because I always had an Internet connection and never thought about it. Now the cartridge is empty (or so it claims.... I just refilled it!!) and I couldn't test this if I wanted to.
