Comparison Ixus 960 versus G9

I bought an Ixus 960 (Powershot 950) and a Canon G9 and compared them thoroughly. As the both use the same CCD chip differences can only come from the lens and the software.

First of all it is amazing what resolution you get from both cameras.
The image of the G9 is crystal clear with natural colors up to the corners both at the wide angle and the long end of the zoom. But somewhere in between at about 28mm the images are not as sharp.
The image of the Ixus 960 is brilliantly sharp as well. But in the corners there is substantial image blur. For the flagship of the Ixus series I had not expected that. My old Ixus 750 where the lens is not any bigger or smaller does that better.
When comparing the Ixus 960 to the G9 (and neglecting the image corners) I believe the G9 shows even a bit more detail resolution. When looking more exactly that does not come from a superior lens but from a different aperture control concept. The G9 tries to use aperture 4 whenever possible. The Ixus 960 I have only seen using 2 apertures: 2.8, and 8. This is a bit unfortunate. When the shutter speed is 1/630 already I would wish the camera to use aperture 4 or 5.6 to improve image quality. When forcing the G9 to use aperture 2.8 the image quality compares to the Ixus.
When comparing the Ixus 960 to the Ixus 750 there definitely is more resolution especially in the low contrast details. But I had expected a larger improvement there. When setting the Ixus 960 to 8 megapixels the difference is negligible.

The big issue is the display of the G9. The display of the Ixus 960 is crystal clear and shows natural colors so that you can exactely judge from the display what the image will look like in the end.
The display of the G9 is even larger but the contrast is much too high and the colors in no way do not look natural. So you have no chance judging the contrast or the colors. I tried to take a dramatic photo of a thundercloud. Of course this requires manual exposure adjustment. But regarding the display I had chosen a brightness that was 2/3 stops above the optimum setting.

It is opposite with the optical viewfinder. The viewfinder of the Ixus 960 (like all Ixus I have seen so far) is small and totally out of focus. So it is next to useless. The viewfinder of the G9 is bad too, but compared to the Ixus it is gorgeous.
Further more the G9 is lacking even the slightest hint of a handle. So you really have to rely on the image stabilizer. And it has so many manual controls that especially the 4 way button is quite small and difficult to use.

Finally I decided for the Ixus 960 because of the display of the G9.
But I am a bit worried. The Ixus 960 proves that Canon can build reasonable displays and the Ixus 750 proves that Canon could build reasonable lenses even at small size three years ago already. So why can't you buy a camera which has both?
Additionally I would like to have a wide angle lens (28mm equivalent). On the long end side 100mm would be sufficient. But I do not want to buy the Ixus 860 because it has an even smaller CCD chip.

That not to say these cameras are bad. Except for the display of the G9 both are great and probably amongst some of the best available in the compact class. Even at wide angle the camera shows more details than I can see with the naked eye. I am complaining on a fairly high level.

Additionally there are some details about the Ixus 960 I like very much:
The titanium body looks precious.
The hot key is great. Thus I can adjust the exposure without opening the menu.
Even if you can't control it at least you get an information about aperture and shutter speed. Even better would be a manual control e.g. use a smaller aperture but a slower shutter speed.
The ISO-auto-setting is reasonable. It uses ISO 80 when possible and in low light conditions or when using flash light it does not exceed ISO 250.
I don't know what the scene modes do exactely. But some of them produce really great results, especially snow and fireworks. (Holds for the Ixus 750)

But there are some details I wonder about:
No apertures between 2.8 and 8 available.
The body is stylish but lacking a proper handle.
On the bottom of the camera there are 4 tips for the camera to stand on. But with the lens retracted they are so close to the center of mass that the camera always falls aside.
When using the self timer the camera focuses as soon as you press the trigger button. So it focuses onto the background.
Almost every camera model uses another battery. So I can't use the spare batteries of my Ixus 750 any more. When using both cameras I have to carry 2 chargers.
The battery charger is quite small. But the power cord is ridiculously long and spacious. Why do you need a cord at all?
The manual only comes on CD (except for a ridiculous leaflet). And even the CD version does not give enough detail information on the many different settings and scene modes. (Holds for the Ixus 750. I have not read the 960 manual yet.)

Ich machs ganz kurz: Beste kompakte die ich je hatte!!!

Hochwertiges Gehäuse, hochwärtiges Canon Objektiv mit meiner Meinung nach völlig ausreichenden 6x Zoom, schönes großes Display, irre viel Einstellungsmöglichkeiten (die ich eig. nur von einer D-SLR kenne) und eine einfach perfekt zum Mitnehmen.

Ich hatte schon einige kompakte Kameras von Canon (zB IXUS Serie), die G9 macht einfach alles besser, die mir bei der IXUS Kamera gefehlt hat (gestochen scharfe Bilder bei Portrait, kürzerer Verschluss bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen, tolle Sportaufnahmen (natürlich bei guten Lichtverhältnissen), C1 C2 Modus zum Einstellen persönlicher Einstellungen)

Empfehlen kann ich diese Kamera auch jene Anwender, die eine einfache Automatik Kamera suchen, die nicht viel einstellen wollen.
Der Einfach-Automatik Modus funktioniert super, wirklich für jene geeignet die nicht technisch in diesen Bereich versiert sind.

Ein kleines Manko trotzdem: Ich hab mir gleich einen Canon Weitwinkel-Converter dazu genommen. Ist ein riesen Teil, das leider den Blitz abdeckt. Also ist man bei Blitzaufnahmen aufgeschmissen, weil man dann immer einen Schatten am Foto hat. Man ist also gezwungen, bei Ww Aufnahmen einen externen Blitz anzuschließen. Das hätte Canon meiner Meinung nach besser machen können, indem sie statt dem ISO Wählrad einen aufklappbaren Blitz integriert hätten.
Die ISO Anzahl könnte man auch mit einem Tastendrück im Menü einstellen, so wie es zB bei der IXUS ist.

Kind vieler Eltern (20. Mai 2008)

Ich habe die G9 erst seit drei Wochen, bin aber jetzt schon hin und weg.
Sie liegt gut in der Hand, ist kompakt, aber angenehm schwer (wegen Verwacklung !) und läßt sich nach einer Stunde intuitiv bedienen.
Für eine Kompaktkamera bietet sie Möglichkeiten, die ihresgleichen suchen.
Man stelle sich eine Kreuzung aus Ixus, Powershot Pro 1 und 350D vor.
Der Bildschirm ist sehr groß, und die Schwenkbarkeit vermisse ich nicht. Live - Histogramm bietet wirklich nicht jede Kamera, ebenso die Möglichkeit, RAWs aufzunehmen. Durch die zwei Kartenformate mußte ich nicht schon wieder eine neue Sorte kaufen. Das einblendbare Drittelraster sorgt für gerade Horizonte.
Albern finde ich das sich immer mehr ausbreitende 16:9 - Format, mein Ziel sind nun mal Papierbilder.
Einen Minuspunkt gibts: Das Handbuch ist nur als PDF erhältlich, ein bei diesem Preis unverständlicher und ärgerlicher Geiz.

Eine nahezu perfekte "Alltagsknipse" für geübte Enthusiasten (20. Mai 2008)

Ich habe die letzten Jahre hauptsächlich mit Canon EOS 20D und 5D photographiert. Die Kameras liefern wirklich gute Bilder und wirken wie ein Katalysator für kreatives Sehen. Für den Alltag allerdings sind solche Kameras nichts, da brauchte es schon immer was Kleines für das Handschuhfach. Bisher verrichtete da bei mir eine Sony DSC-P10 ihren Dienst, eine einfache Knipse mit 5 Megapixel ohne wirkliche Highlights, für einfach Schnappschüsse, keinesfalls für künstlerische Ansprüche.
Nun wuchsen aber die Ansprüche und Fähigkeiten, die kleine Sony konnte das inzwischen nicht mehr erfüllen. Also sah ich mich auf dem Kompaktmarkt um. Und musste leider feststellen, dass es schlicht keine gute Kompakte mehr gibt, bei der der Hersteller wirklich auf Bildqualität statt Pixelwahn setzt. Letztlich überzeugten mich aber die SLR-nahen Möglichkeiten der G9, zu nennen vor allem die Kreativprogramme A, T, M und P, dazu noch das ISO-Wahlrad und der RAW-Modus.
Nach nunmehr zwei Wochen intensiverer Tests kann ich sagen:
Im Kompaktbereich kann man wohl wirklich keine bessere Kamera bekommen. Solange die Lichtverhältnisse für maximal ISO 200 ausreichend sind, macht sie sehr überzeugende Bilder.

Es bleibt für die Zukunft zu hoffen, dass die Hersteller endlich ihren Pixelmanie bei hochklassigen Kompaktkameras aufgeben. 7 Megapixel hätten auch genügt und dieser Kamera den letzten Schliff gegeben. So aber ist die Pixelfläche um den Faktor 18.8 kleiner als bei meiner EOS 5D, und das merkt man einfach, das Farbrauschen bei ISO 400 aufwärts ist wirklich unpassend für eine ansonsten so gute Kamera. Aber letztlich kann man sich auch damit arrangieren. Einfach die hohen ISO-Werte weitestgehend meiden.

Auf das Einsatzgebiet kommt es an! (18. Mai 2008)

Ich kann bei meiner G9 bis Iso 400 kein wahrnehmbares Rauschen feststellen. Wenn man allerdings mit P fotografiert, wählt die Kamera gerne Iso 800. Und dann rauscht es durchaus.(Zur Rezession von TW). Hier muss ich sagen, eine Automatik, die solche Werte vorschlägt und damit eine ungenügende Bildqualiät abliefert, hätte sich Canon sparen (sollen?) können. Das machen "Ixusse"&Co. besser. Durch Nachbearbeitung kann man aber auch verrauschte Bilder in den Griff bekommen, wahrscheinlich hat Canon deshalb auch die höheren ISO-Werte angeboten. Es soll ja tatsächlich (Hobby-)fotografen geben, die Fotos nachbearbeiten. Ich benutze übrigens hauptsächlich M (C1, C2), Av und SCN. Gerade den SCN- Einstellungen von Canon ein Kompliment. Durch und durch brauchbar. Generell muss man sich vor Augen halten, dass diese Kamera fast alle Einstellmöglichkeiten einer DSLR bietet. Das zu einem günstigeren Preis und zu einer viel geringeren Grösse. Und was die Verarbeitungsqualität angeht, die kann bisher keine einzige Bridge/Superzoom (auch nicht aus eigenem Hause) bieten. Das sind die Stärken der G9 und waren für mich ausschlaggebende Kaufargumente. Für diejenigen, die grundsätzlich mehr wollen/brauchen bleiben die DSLR's, für diejenigen die gute Bilder ohne viel Gefummel wollen Ixus&Co. und für alle die zwar eine Kompakte, aber noch mehr Zoom wollen (und Plastik mögen!) die Bridge/Superzoom's. Den einzigen Kritikpunkt den ich an der G9 habe, ist die Geschwindigkeit (Sport-, Kinder-, Theaterfotografie, u.ä.). Wenn man ein Foto gemacht hat, dauert es zu lange bis man wieder ein nächstes, auch scharfes Bild einfangen kann (natürlich schon mit abgeschalteter Rückschau). Manchmal sind Sekundenbruchteile entscheidend. Ich denke, dass könnte man zukünftig besser. Für solche Einsätze zukünftig nur noch DSLR. Mehr Weitwinkel wäre schön gewesen, habe ich aber bisher nicht wirklich gebraucht (Ich habe notfalls einen Weitwinkelaufsatz). Was ich auch noch loswerden will: Verkaufen sich mittlerweile Megapixel so gut, dass Canon eine schlechtere (aber immer noch sehr gute) Bildqualität gegenüber älteren Modellen in Kauf nimmt (G7-G9; D20-D40)? Hier sollte wirklich die Devise lauten:"Lieber weniger Megapixel, zugunsten besserer Bildqualität".
